Cover letter needs to spin gaps, job-hopping, struggles as 'resilience' and 'adaptability.' But it feels like lying when the truth is 'I was struggling and didn't know why.'

Truth is not marketable.

One calm sentence about the gap, then straight to what you can do. Interviewers take their cue from you.
